[October 21, 2024] – President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration is set to introduce significant amendments to the Tobacco Control Act in Parliament tomorrow, with a key proposal to raise the legal age for purchasing and handling tobacco products from 18 to 21 years. This legislative push is a critical component of the government’s larger initiative to reduce tobacco consumption and protect younger generations from the harmful effects of nicotine.

This proposal follows President Muizzu’s recent decisive action to ban the import and use of vaping devices, a measure that was finalized on October 15 as part of his ongoing anti-tobacco campaign. The vaping ban, which will be enforced in stages, is expected to be fully implemented by December 15. Meanwhile, the newly proposed amendments in Parliament will focus on further tightening tobacco regulations.

In addition to raising the legal age, the amendments seek to impose stricter penalties for violations of the Tobacco Control Act, specifically targeting illegal sales and distribution networks that enable underage access to tobacco products. These measures aim to create stronger deterrents against non-compliance and safeguard public health.

Health experts and public health advocates have praised the proposed amendments, noting that raising the legal age for tobacco sales is a crucial step toward reducing tobacco access among younger populations. By doing so, the government hopes to lower the long-term health risks associated with nicotine addiction.

President Muizzu’s administration has made the fight against tobacco use a central pillar of its public health strategy. The President has urged both the public and enforcement agencies to actively participate in ensuring adherence to these new regulations, emphasizing their role in safeguarding the nation’s health.

The proposed amendments will be introduced for parliamentary debate tomorrow, marking a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to a healthier, tobacco-free future for the Maldives.
