New regulations reinforce WA’s strong stance on controlled vape access, requiring a doctor’s prescription for all vape purchases
Perth, Western Australia – Western Australia (WA) today introduced new regulations aimed at upholding the state’s stringent vaping laws, continuing to set a national standard for controlled access to vaping products. Despite recent changes at the federal level that would allow vapes to be sold over-the-counter in pharmacies across the country, WA remains steadfast in its requirement for a doctor’s prescription to purchase vapes, prioritizing the health and safety of young people.
This move by the Cook Government comes as part of an ongoing commitment to mitigate health risks associated with vaping and to curb unlawful sales targeting youth. Recognizing community concerns about increasing vape access, especially for young people, the state government acted promptly to implement these new restrictions effective immediately.
Under these regulations, any individual seeking to purchase a vape in WA must first obtain a prescription from a licensed doctor, after which the product can only be dispensed by a pharmacist. Health professionals and pharmacists across the state have expressed their support for this approach, recognizing the potential health harms posed by the unregulated sale of vaping products.
The Department of Health, in collaboration with the Therapeutic Goods Administration, will continue to enforce these laws rigorously. Community members are encouraged to report any illegal sales or distribution of vapes to Crimestoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or visiting crimestopperswa.com.au.
Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson voiced her support for the new measures, saying:
“We have listened to the concerns of the community and pharmacists, who did not want vapes to be so easily available to young people. We share their concerns, and that is why we have introduced regulations to maintain our tough protections. Vapes often contain nicotine and dangerous chemicals, and we will do everything we can to keep these harmful products out of the hands of kids.”
Western Australia’s regulations reflect a firm commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that young people remain protected from the potential harms of vaping.
