In a significant crackdown, Brazilian police have intercepted 129,000 smuggled Vapes during a routine highway inspection in the state of Paraná. This operation marks the largest Vape smuggling bust in Brazil for the year 2024.

The seizure took place in the southwestern city of Vitorino, Paraná, where officers from the Federal Highway Police (PRF) stopped a truck for inspection. Upon questioning, the 30-year-old driver initially claimed that the vehicle was empty. However, a thorough search revealed a hidden cargo of Vapes from popular brands such as Geek Vape and Vaporesso, which have been banned in Brazil since 2009.

The driver has been arrested and faces charges of smuggling. Both the truck and the illicit cargo have been confiscated. The suspect is currently being held at the Federal Police Station in Guarapuava, Paraná.
During interrogation, the driver disclosed that he had loaded the Vapes in Céu Azul, a town in western Paraná, and was en route to Pato Branco. The PRF has noted that Paraná state leads the nation in the number of Vape smuggling cases.
Earlier this year, in May, another major bust in Santa Terezinha de Itaipu, also in Paraná, resulted in the seizure of 100,000 Vapes, making it the second-largest smuggling case of the year.
Paraná, situated in the southern region of Brazil and bordering Paraguay, has long grappled with cross-border smuggling issues. The complex geography of the border area complicates regulatory efforts, making it a hotspot for the illicit movement of goods, including Vapes, traditional cigarettes, and other contraband.
The smuggled items typically enter Brazil through covert channels, posing significant challenges for local law enforcement. Paraguayan goods, which benefit from lower taxes and looser regulatory standards, are a primary source of these smuggled items. This cross-border smuggling not only threatens Brazil’s border security but also disrupts its economic order.
Local authorities continue to intensify efforts to combat smuggling activities, acknowledging the persistent threat they pose to national security and economic stability. The recent successful operation underscores the ongoing commitment of Brazilian law enforcement agencies to curtail illegal trade and safeguard the country’s borders.
