South Africa, October 2024 – In a landmark move to enhance consumer safety and promote product integrity in the vaping industry, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) has officially published its long-anticipated standard for vaping products. This development signals a significant step forward for both manufacturers and consumers.
The newly published standard sets out comprehensive guidelines designed to ensure consistency, safety, and quality across all vaping products. It encompasses critical aspects such as manufacturing processes, packaging, labeling, testing protocols, and regulations on the composition of e-liquids.
One of the key features of this standard is the introduction of a nicotine ceiling set at 35%. Asanda Gcoyi, CEO of the Vapour Products Association of South Africa (VPASA), highlighted the importance of this regulation, stating, “Our commitment to consumer safety is paramount. Implementing a nicotine content ceiling will align South Africa’s vaping market with international standards, safeguarding consumers from excessively high nicotine concentrations.” This ceiling aligns South African regulations with those of other nations, such as Sweden, Canada, and the UK, which have adopted similar measures.
Although compliance with the new guidelines is currently voluntary, Gcoyi urged all industry stakeholders—including manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers—to adopt the standards. She emphasized the relevance of the Consumer Protection Act, which compels businesses to align their products with established standards. “These standards will help consumers make informed choices about the vaping products they use, knowing that those adhering to SABS guidelines have been designed with their safety in mind,” Gcoyi added.
As the South African vaping industry moves into this critical phase of transition, it is imperative for all involved parties to familiarize themselves with the new standards. Available for purchase through the SABS, this standard not only marks progress in the rapidly evolving vaping market but also reinforces the commitment to protecting consumer health and safety as the market continues to expand.
